Toward PIT-UN: Siva Vaidhyanathan

Toward PIT-UN: Siva Vaidhyanathan

At the inaugural event of the Toward Public Interest Technology series, Professor Siva Vaidhyanathan shared his unique perspective, highlighting the need to bridge the gap between technologists developing innovations and scholars examining their broader societal impacts. He emphasized that early, interdisciplinary conversations among experts are essential to ensure that technologies are designed to truly benefit the public interest, with the understanding that there exist varying definitions of "public interest" across different contexts.

Reflecting on his background in journalism, Vaidhyanathan discussed how his ability to distill complex information into accessible narratives has enriched his academic work. He also spoke about the challenges of public scholarship, the need for openness to criticism, and how identity markers shape public discourse. When it comes to artificial intelligence, Vaidhyanathan emphasized the importance of moving beyond speculative, science fiction-like scenarios and instead critically examining AI's real-world applications, such as issues of bias, privacy, and digital sovereignty.
